Texas Concealed Carry Military Exemption

Think of it as a Military Discount…

If you are active-duty military, a member of the Texas military forces, or a qualifying veteran, you may be eligible for a Texas concealed carry military exemption when applying for your Texas License to Carry (LTC).

Texas law provides a special provision for military members and veterans who have qualifying firearms training or range qualification through their military service.

What Is the Texas Military LTC Exemption?

Since you have already demonstrated you know how to shoot in the military, Texas doesn’t need you to shoot again. Therefore, if you have qualifying military records you can upload those with your application and skip the shooting proficiency altogether.

To qualify, your military firearms training or qualification generally must have been completed within the 10 years before applying for your LTC. Texas DPS requires documentation showing that you meet the requirements.

Important: The military exemption does not eliminate the required LTC classroom training. You still need to complete the required Texas LTC education. So doing it Online like our course is perfect for you.

What Military Documentation Do I Need?

Depending on your status, Texas DPS may require documentation such as military identification, an LES, current orders, a commanding officer letter, or qualifying discharge documentation. Veterans may use qualifying documentation such as a DD-214.

Because documentation requirements can vary based on military branch, obtaining your official military shooting documents is best, make sure you review the current DPS requirements before submitting your application.
