How to Get a LTC at 18 in Texas

18 years old and want a Texas LTC?

If you’re 18 and searching for how to get a LTC in Texas, you may be surprised to learn that eligible 18-year-olds can apply and get a Texas License to Carry (LTC) just like anyone else.

Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) currently states that it will not deny an otherwise eligible applicant solely because they are between 18 and 20 years old. Keep in mind that if you try and conceal carry under permitless carry (constitutional carry) law you still have to be 21 to do so.

Can You Get a Texas LTC at 18?

Yes. An 18-year-old may be eligible for a Texas LTC if they meet the applicable state and federal eligibility requirements.

The Texas LTC application process for 18-20 year olds is the same as 21+:

  • Completing the Texas LTC application
  • Meeting the eligibility requirements
  • Completing the required LTC training
  • Completing the required handgun proficiency requirements
  • Submitting fingerprints and required documentation
  • Completing the DPS application process

Texas DPS recognizes both traditional classroom training and approved online LTC classroom training options. With online training, the applicant must still complete the required range instruction and handgun proficiency demonstration with a qualified LTC instructor.
