Campus carry in Texas allows individuals with a Texas License to Carry (LTC) to carry a concealed handgun on public college and university campuses, subject to Texas law and the specific rules of the institution.
Texas DPS states that an LTC holder may carry a concealed handgun on the campus of institution of higher education, unless the location is otherwise prohibited or the institution has established restrictions permitted by law. Private institutions typically are allowed broader gun prohibition than public institutions.
Is an LTC Required for Campus Carry in Texas?
Yes, and is the only way to legally carry on campus of permitted schools. Texas DPS explains that the campus-carry provisions require an LTC and that the handgun must be carried concealed, no open carry allowed by non-law enforcement individuals.
This makes a Texas LTC particularly important for eligible college students, faculty, and other individuals who want to understand their legal options regarding concealed carry on campus.
There can also be campus-specific rules and prohibited locations, so having an LTC does not mean that every location on a college campus is automatically unrestricted.
