How old do you have to be to get an LTC in Texas?
This is one of the most common questions about the Texas License to Carry program.
Texas DPS states that individuals between 18 and 20 years old can apply for a Texas LTC if they otherwise meet the applicable eligibility requirements. This changed after a federal court ruling and caused Texas to lower the age to 18 from previously setting it at 21.
Why did Texas change the age of the LTC?
Texas changed the age due to a federal court ruling that said it was unconstitutional to prevent law abiding adults (18–20-year-olds) from exercising their 2nd Amendment Right. So, Texas lowered the age for an LTC to 18. However, carrying under “Constitutional Carry” still remains 21+. See, Texas only needed to provide an avenue for 18–20-year-olds to be able to carry to comply with the federal court ruling.
Do You Have to Take an LTC Course?
Yes. Texas DPS requires LTC applicants to complete the required training. Applicants may complete the classroom portion through an approved online course provider and then complete the required range instruction and handgun proficiency demonstration with a qualified LTC instructor.
