How to Get a Texas License to Carry (LTC)

A Simple Step-by-Step Guide

If you’re thinking about getting your Texas License to Carry (LTC), you’ll be glad to know the process is actually pretty easy. We have had dozens of people use our Online LTC Course and be done in less time than it would take to schedule an in-person class. Whether you want the added legal protections of an LTC, plan to travel to states that honor the Texas license or simply want to become a more knowledgeable and responsible gun owner, earning your LTC is a smart investment.

Step 1: Complete a Texas DPS-Approved LTC Course

The first step is completing the required classroom instruction through a Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) approved LTC instructor whether in-person or online. We recommend online so you don’t waste a whole Saturday.

Our online course allows you to complete the classroom portion from the comfort of your home and at your own pace.

Step 2: Complete the Range Qualification

After finishing the classroom portion, you’ll need to complete the required shooting qualification with a certified Texas LTC instructor.

If you are an active-duty military member or veteran, you may qualify to use your military shooting qualification instead of completing the live-fire portion.

Step 3: Submit Your Texas LTC Application

Once you’ve completed the training requirements, submit your application through the Texas Department of Public Safety website and pay the application fee. Be sure to check their site if you qualify for an application discount.

You’ll also need to provide:

  • Your LTC training certificate – LTC-104
  • Fingerprints, Texas DPS will email you after you file the application on how to do this
  • Any additional documentation requested by DPS

Step 4: Wait for Approval

After DPS receives your application and supporting documents, they’ll review everything and process your Texas License to Carry. Be sure to follow along the approval process on the Texas DPS site so you can see if there are any hang ups or anything additional you need to do.

Once approved, your Texas LTC will be mailed directly to you.
